Judith cohen biography
Cohen worked full-time for North American Aviation while caring for three young children and attending night classes at the University of Southern California. When Cohen was starting out, less than one-half of one percent of all engineers were women. Throughout her career of nearly forty years, Cohen worked as an engineer specializing in space technologies.
She worked on the Relay System Satellite, which remained functional for nearly 40 years. She also led the team of engineers that designed the Hubble Space Telescope. Her work on the Abort-Guidance System on the Apollo Lunar Module made it possible for astronauts to return safely after an oxygen tank explosion crippled Apollo Apollo 13 launched in April of It was the seventh crewed mission in the Apollo space program.
If it had been successful, it would have been the third mission of the Apollo space program to land on the moon. Two days later, it lost one of its oxygen tanks. The crew no longer had enough oxygen to complete their mission. Debris littered the space around the vessel, obscuring their view. Ground crew directed the astronauts to power up the Apollo Lunar Module and use it as a lifeboat to get back to Earth.

My mother usually considered her work on the Apollo program to be the highlight of her career. When disaster struck the Apollo 13 mission, it was the Abort-Guidance System that brought the astronauts home safely. Inafter retiring from practice as an engineer, she began a publishing company called Cascade Pass with her third husband, David Katz.
Cascade Pass has sold more thanof their children's books in these two series. Cascade Pass also published a book called The Women of Apollo written by Robyn Friend, Cohen's daughter-in-lawwhich features short biographies of four women who helped put the first man on the moon, Cohen among them. In the early s, Cohen married fellow engineer Bernard Siegel, whom she met while a freshman in engineering school at Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, New York.
The couple divorced in the mids. Inthey had a son, actor and musician Jack Black. In a memorial tribute, her son Neil notes that she was troubleshooting problems with schematics on the day she went into labor, called her boss to let him know she had fixed the problem and then delivered Jack.
