Obaidul Quader was seriously wounded by the grisly grenade attack on August 21, He was admitted into the Apollo Hospital in Delhi where doctors removed about 80 splinters from his body.

While in prison after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's murder inQuader was made the president of Bangladesh Chhatra League and remained for two consecutive terms, leading the organisation during the difficult times of military regime. In Awami League's term, Quader was the state minister for sports. Quader served the post for two consecutive terms. Obaidul Quader elected National Assembly Member in parliamentary election as a selected candidate of Bangladesh Awami League from Noakhali-5 constituency. He was arrested by the caretaker government of Bangladesh on March 09, and remained in prison for 17 months and 26 days.
